Sound Of The Week: Moonchild Sanelly

Trailblazing South African artist Moonchild Sanelly returns with her latest single, “Scrambled Eggs”, now streaming through Transgressive. Produced by Johan Hugo (associated with Self Esteem, Miguel, M.I.A), “Scrambled Eggs” is the debut single from Moonchild’s anticipated new studio album, expected to be announced later this year. The song signifies a vibrant comeback for this unique artist and visionary, whose distinctive future-ghetto-funk sound has elevated her to global prominence. Her career features collaborations with notables like Beyoncé, Ghetts, Gorillaz, Major Lazer, and Wizkid, and includes critically acclaimed albums Rabulapha! (2015) and Phases (2022).

“When I started staying in the GOOD hotels, I noticed how the world is obsessed with avo and eggs for breakfast,” explains Moonchild on the new single. “It became a thing… you get avo & eggs for breakfast at the good places …” She added “My writing recently has been me at my most humble, and Scrambled Eggs is me reminding everyone – by the way, I AM that bitch! I’m a multi-passport artist travelling the world in custom designs and doing it all on my terms. And I’m really f**king proud of that.”

Directed by Jabu Nadia Newman, the “Scrambled Eggs” video was filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa. It showcases an exuberant, unruly adventure celebrating female-driven enterprises, styled by Chloe Andrea Welgemoed and featuring costumes by local designers Siyababa and Sihle Masango, inspired by Johannesburg’s progressive style and playful nature.

Moonchild says, “The Scrambled Eggs video marks my arrival at the beginning. It’s the beginning of being in THAT space;- this new world that this crazy, amazing, powerful, beautiful gang of absolute muthafuckers built together.  This world contains everything I’ve ever worked for…  These are my people, and this is our superhero moment.”

Moonchild Sanelly will be touring this summer, with UK festival performances at Glastonbury, WOMAD, Green Man, and Jazz Café Festival.

From her beginnings in Port Elizabeth as Sanelisiwe Twisha, Moonchild Sanelly has always embraced a path of distinctive artistic expression. Her creative journey flourished from choreographing dance to Spice Girls’ music, self-learning the piano, performing with her family in church, to composing poetry. When moving to Durban in 2005 to study fashion, she immersed herself in the local music scene, eventually advancing to writing for reggae bands and battling rappers in Johannesburg. Here, she developed her signature sound of ‘future-ghetto-funk,’ propelling her to stardom in South Africa, and enabling her dynamic live performances to captivate a global audience.

Moonchild Sanelly’s career is marked by her uncompromising artistry blended with commercial success, advocating for female sexual empowerment and self-expression. Her inspirational motivation stems from personal hardships, including the passing of her mother during her teen years, which reinforced her belief in her inherent strength and potential.

Her breakthrough album, Rabulpha!, came out in 2015, earning her a spotlight as a rising star and enabling collaborations with local legends and international icons alike. After her impactful debut, she continued to release hits in South Africa and signed with Transgressive records in 2020, leading to her eclectic mini-LP Nüdes. Her second studio album, Phases, released in 2022, was a collaborative feat featuring artists like Sad Night Dynamite, Ghetts, Wesley Joseph, and more, exemplifying her versatility and influence across music genres.

With the release of “Scrambled Eggs”, Moonchild Sanelly reaffirms her status as a relentless innovator and a powerful voice in the music world, setting the stage for her upcoming studio album.
