Mixtape: Just Her

Next up to join our mixtape series is Just Her! With a unique ability to move your feet and heart in equal measure, she crafts her own brand of emotive house music, spreading joy on dancefloors, festival fields, and beach parties worldwide. Claire Spooner, AKA Just Her, was born with the music bug. Growing up as a hi-fi addict, she spent her spare time collecting vinyl, recording mixtapes, and crafting DIY radio shows. A natural musician, she played any instrument within reach and studied Creative Music Production at university before becoming a Lecturer in Music Technology.

In 2012, Claire formed the duo Him_Self_Her with Leon Baggotts. They released eight EPs and singles, including standout tracks with Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels label. “Gone Too Long,” featuring Kieran Fowkes, became Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune and catapulted them into stardom.

When Him_Self_Her ended in 2015, Just Her emerged. Her debut solo EP Flatline, released in 2016, gained global spins from prominent DJs. She continued to impress with big releases such as “Follow You Down,” one of 2017’s bestsellers on Global Underground, and her debut on Anjunadeep. In 2019, “Lay Your Weapons” on Crosstown Rebels capped off the decade. Just Her also created Constant Circles, blending music with contemporary visual art. This outlet featured label parties, art exhibitions, and a radio show.

The 2020s saw Just Her thrive, balancing motherhood and music. She achieved major releases on Armada, Renaissance, HE.SHE.THEY, and Soundgarden, and performed worldwide, including multiple tours in India, the USA, and Australia. In 2024, Just Her continues to soar with releases on Colorize, Balance Series, Selador, and more. Her mission is to make the industry humble again, spreading happiness and peace through emotive melodies and lyrical messages.

I had a blast recording this! I decided to go on a bit of a high energy house and techno journey with a slightly leftfield vibe and a faster BPM than people might expect from me. I started out with some groovy house and ended with some pumping 130bpm techno, keeping the thread of melody and emotion running throughout.

As always I was aiming for at least 50% female, gender expensive and/or queer artists in this mix, but it has ended up being much more than 50%. There is so much great music from female artists now that there really is no excuse for a lack of diversity in mixes and on show line ups!

You can also hear a couple of forthcoming tunes from me in here – my remix of Subjacent which is coming soon on People of The Light, and my track “Resistance” which is part of an upcoming EP on Barcelona’s Rhythm Cult in August.
